IF - 80's: Archie Comics

I was totally hooked on Archie Comics when I was 12 — I believe it was around 1987-1988 and my friends and I read Archie, Betty and Veronica and good ol' Jughead Double Digest Magazines for hours! I still kept all my classic Archie Digests - those were fun memories!

My daughter likes and reads the Archie Digest books. She mostly likes the Betty and Veronica titles.
Another great illo. So fun to see these drawn in your style. Who's next?

Ohhhh... I also loved Archie Comics. I recall that my sister Lilia used to draw Archie, Betty, Veronica and Carlos on little pieces of paper in order to play with them. I loved to see her playing like that, she even made a cardboard house for them!

I like ur illo very very much! It's gorgeous and very detailed :)

This week on IF has made me truly happy. Contributions are great!

Amazing...Archie was antique even in the 80's, he's the same age as Bob Dylan!

Archie and his gang are ageless. The sixties were when I was reading their exploits... and there was that bubblegum band of studio musicians. But that's another decade.

Your characters are so much more expressive than what is sold in those comics.

What fun! I love that jughead is in the background snapping his fingers to a tune. I wonder what's playin on the jukebox? Could it be a hit song by the Archies?

Ah! Delicious! Lovely use of colour. And I really enjoy the kinda simplification of the Archie style.

I was reading about some or other new controversy recently. Apparently the publishers are trying out a new 'photorealistic' look for one special issue. It looks hideous!

I think you should urgently submit your look to them. If they've GOT to change Archie, at least let them change it for the better!

My 80s stab is Old lady. (You've already seen it. Thanks for you lovely comment!)

Once again your style shows through...the first time I saw an Archie comic I thought it was an 'antique' issue that had been preserved and was upset there wasn't any spidey or superman about...I'm still amazed that certain comics continue as the modern youth's tastes seem so far removed from such styles...

Wow, great piece! I'm glad you stopped by my blog, since it gave me a chance to visit yours! Excellent work, I really like your style. I am trying to "simplify" some of my work lately and you have hit the nail on the head here. Cool also that you are a fan of Garth Bruner's work... he and I have been friends for many many years... lots of great art stories there! Anyway, keep up the greatness. Very inspiring!!

That whole 1950s redux was huge then, I recall. Have you seen the newest version of Veronica and Betty? Ugh...they tried to "update" them...now they look like Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. No joke!

Excellent work! I love your depiction!

The Archie comics are great! I've a couple friends who draw those and apparently it's a great company to work for.

Did you hear their changing the Archis Comics line??? I read about it from comics expert R.C. Harvey that had it in a column of his. I briefly checked the Archis site and didn't see the page Harvey had linked to. I did see the Katy Keene page and that's the style they're going for. Here's that link:
http://www2.archiecomics.com/katy-keene/katy-keene-fashions.html

There's such a demand to be "realistic". Realistic???? It's comics!!!

Blogger Michelle Lana said...

HI Rob...Thanks for the message...ya, they do want to go towards the "realistic type" this time...I do like the ol' cartoony style better though. Thanks for stopping by!

Michelle, what a blast from the past! I, too, loved Archie comics, and have kept all my digests. My favorites were the double digests, and I'd buy them when my family went on roadtrips. They kept me occupied for hours!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! :)
